Twice this week, I have found myself in discussions with business owners regarding the creation of their own online content channels. I enjoy these conversations. I sit up in my chair, eyes get big and wide with excitement, I’m ready to engage back in this conversation.
Creating online video content, is one of my new favorite subjects. I say this, because I meet and interact with so many different business owners… each day. In these “variety of businesses”, their stories become the foundation for some fantastic video. And that, is all that content really is… Stories.
Last week, I briefly talked about the art of telling stories. And that some people can tell a great story, and other people just can’t. When it comes to business, and “creating content “, and putting this “content “online… Here’s another rule to follow: if you can’t effectively tell a story about your business – for your business… find someone within your business who can tell that story for you… Now.
In today’s digital society, and the increasing importance of putting regular, topical, video content online, you need a “go to person” within your organization. One who customers who will put a name and face too. You need to spokesman. Or spokeswoman. You must take control of your online media universe. Know that someone else, some other business owner, is going to use video too. They’re going to put regular video content on line, they’ll be from your area, within your business category, and they’ll eventually take your customers. How so? Search engines. Your business competitor (while you were hemming and hawing over whether or not to start putting out online content), started yesterday, and is already convincing people that you have done business with before… that it is alright to do business with him. And they are listening. What are you to do? The answer is quite simple, create content – you need it regularly. Eventually, everyone will be using video. But until that time, you have an opportunity to kickstart the video revolution in your business category, in your area.
It’s funny that “content marketing” is the new buzz word for 2012. Content marketing. What is “content marketing”? I call it business as usual — only with a camera. It’s always business as usual at your business, only now you have an engaging way to show another side of your business. Because of the video element, remember that personality is involved, and likability, and delivery.
People say to me, I can’t create content, I don’t have anything good to say. I say bullshit. There is an interesting story happening each and every day at your business. You just have to take the blinders off, find what it is, and pull the trigger quickly to have it documented.
Do some yourself, and do some professionally. But always be putting out fresh, new content. By doing so you will be able to effectively key-tag around your videos, and help boost your organic search engine listings. Soon you will be creating enough content, that you might want to start a regularly hosted YouTube channel. Until then, take it one step at a time. Start creating content. Posting content. Video is here to stay. Its numbers are growing at a phenomenal rate each and every quarter of every year. Make the decision for video now, and be far ahead of your competitors when they finally decide to jump on board.
