McDonalds has had a great rise to the top. And I don’t anticipate any time soon that McDonald’s is going to plunder to the depths of Checkers or Fuddruckers, but it’s a new world out there today. When I was a kid, McDonald’s was the destination of all parents for quick meals, road trips, fundraisers, hangouts, etc. We grew up on McDonald’s food. Yes, I am admitting that. A lot of us did. Maybe not all the time, but we ate there probably a lot more than you do now. I cannot remember the last anything I bought at McDonald’s. Why? Why would I? First of all, do I want to throw myself into the lunchtime madhouse that is McDonald’s? No. Do I honestly say to myself… “You know, I enjoy the cuisine at McDonald’s so much that… aw, to hell with the line, I’m waiting. Shamrock Shake is back.” No.
If I wanted a fast food burger, where would I go? Hardees. Hardees has a good burger. And they have gained my perception that, if I was chosing a burger, and a fast food burger… I would seek out a Hardee’s first. And if I didnt have a Hardee’s nearby… then it isn’t worth it to me to have a burger. Best burger in Cape area, in Southern Delaware… Luca in Millsboro. Trust me on that one. Fantastic. You’ll spend $9 for it… but seriously, it’s something to write a separate blog post about. McDonald’s just isn’t cutting it for me, and apparently many others on their food choices too. What? I not moved by the fact that I can get 20 McNuggets for $5. We’ve seen the shows on what exactly a McNugget is… and we don’t like that. I could go to Royal Farms and get a couple real chicken tenders for less than the McNuggets. Less of them, but something I can pass off that resembles what a chicken tender just might look like.
People are watching what they eat. People are watching their dollars. People want to reconnect with their food. I believe the problem lies in… if I am watching what I eat, and watching how much money I spend, and looking for local/sustainable/healthier options, McDonald’s isn’t going to be on my list. But Chipotle and Panera might.
